Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the 34th Annual Spooner 10K & Spooky 5K. Each year, the GNBTC relies on volunteer support to help staff this and other events. If you would like to volunteer, please complete the form below and select your job preference. All volunteers will receive a short-sleeve volunteer shirt, be entered in a special volunteer raffle, and get to eat the post-race food. If you sign-up early, you can reserve your shirt size.
Course Marshal Course Marshals play an important role supporting the participants, spectators and community on race day. Their primary role is to ensure participant safety by making sure the course stays clear and that runners stay on course. We also ask that Course Marshals encourage participants when convenient by clapping or cheering. Should a Course Marshal be approached by a runner in need of assistance, she or he should have a cell phone available to contact race organizers and call 911 if necessary. Course Marshals may also be asked questions by community members: What race is this? What mile is this? This information may be obtained by viewing a course map. Please bring a copy of the map with you on race day. We welcome adults and supervised teens for this responsibility.
Water Stops It is essential that runners are provided an adequate amount of water along the race course. Water stop volunteers will be asked to prepare cups of water on location before the event starts, hand cups to runners as they pass, remove all trash from the street, and, of course, cheer on the runners! Each water stop will be supplied with plenty of water, cups, and gloves. Community partners and neighborhood supporters are invited to help with this critical piece.
Event Set-Up and Clean-Up Though not a glamorous job, event set-up and clean-up are essential to the event's success and continued support by the City of New Bedford. Event Set-Up may begin as early as 7:00 a.m. and Event Clean-Up may last until 1pm.
Food Preparation Like working with food? Then this job is for you! We need help preparing fruit, drinks and other goodies for the runners. We need volunteers both before and after the races.
